Press Release: Breakthrough for TIMARIS Machine - First Contract for Thin Film Head Applications
December 28, 2005

Kahl am Main, December 28, 2005 - The SINGULUS TECHNOLOGIES AG (SINGULUS) was able to win its first customer for the TIMARIS machine. The system for the production of thin film heads was supplied to a US company. The purchase price of a TIMARIS machine amounts to approximately EUR 5 million.

“With this first order, SINGULUS with its coating technology succeeded in overcoming the high entry barriers in the semi-conductor industry, says Chief Executive Officer Roland Lacher. “Accordingly, we were able to conclude the first important key contracts for the new business segment MRAM.

SINGULUS is the global market leader in the optical disc area and expanded its business operations with equipment of TMR coating technology for IT applications in 2002. SINGULUS’ core competence is in the area of vacuum thin film coating. The means vacuum coating machines for use in the semi-conductor industry, on which either MRAM wafer (Magnetic Random Access Memory) or write-read heads for magnetic hard disc drives are produced.

“In the process of the thin film head application, magnetic materials are deposited enabling the next generation of storage media to write information on the hard disc drive with a higher storage density, says Dr. Wolfgang Maaß, Senior Manager Semiconductor Equipment. “Write-read heads are important key elements for magnetic hard disc drives with high storage density, which are in computers as well as increasingly in the growth market of satellite digital receivers with built-in magnetic hard disc drives. With a keystroke the satellite receiver records the currently broadcast program without loss of quality. Subsequently, the program can be burnt on DVD and archived, continues Maaß.
