Kahl am Main, March 6, 2007 - The SINGULUS TECHNOLOGIES AG (SINGULUS) cooperates with Sony DADC, Salzburg, in further developing the production technology for the mass production of Blu-ray dual layer Discs with a storage capacity of 50 GB.
The goal of the cooperation is being able to offer independent disc manufacturers inline production machines for dual layer Blu-ray Discs in the near term. Accordingly, disc producers will be able to build up sufficient capacity for the production of the new disc generation. Sony DADC will provide SINGULUS the necessary production expertise. Following SINGULUS’ cooperation with Sony Japan for the development of single layer Blu-ray Discs with 25 GB at the end of 2004, the now concluded agreement will further strengthen SINGULUS’ position in the global optical disc market.
In 2005 and 2006, SINGULUS delivered production equipment for single layer Blu-ray Discs to all major disc manufacturers. The first movies on single layer Blu-ray Discs with 25 GB storage capacity were introduced in the summer of 2006. The start of the machines for Blu-ray dual layer Discs is scheduled for the second half of 2007. Due to the high storage capacity of dual layer Blu-ray (50 GB) SINGULUS is still convinced that this format will prevail in the market in the end.
“The good cooperation with Sony DADC offers SINGULUS the big opportunity to establish itself even faster in the market for the new disc formats as the leading partner of the Hollywood studios und to gain enormous competitive advantages, comments SINGULUS TECHNOLOGIES’ CEO Stefan A. Baustert.
The newly developed production line will be introduced in this year’s summer.
With a consistent focus on its core competence within the ten years since the management buy-out SINGULUS TECHNOLOGIES transformed itself into the global market leader for machines and equipment for optical storage media and is the only machine producer in the world offering the entire value-added chain of the production of optical discs. SINGULUS is the leading machine supplier for DVDs with a global market share of more than 65 % and already launched the first HD DVD production systems on the basis of the SPACELINE II as early as in the summer of 2005. The machines range from mastering and injection molding to replication lines. Thus, the position of SINGULUS TECHNOLOGIES in the optical disc sector remains unique in the world.
